Heart of Stones is the epic saga of the Sullivan family as they flee from starvation ravaged Ireland during the Potato Famine and settle on a Mississippi plantation near the fictional town of Scottsville.

The clouds of Civil War have not yet gathered on the horizon, but slavery and the attendant evils are already affecting the Sullivans. Multiple threads of intrigue woven into the fabric of the Sullivan family story are each important to the ultimate fate of this family. It is Grace, the oldest daughter, who becomes the primary focus. Petite, beautiful, serious, and sensitive, Grace is appalled by the injustice of treating human beings as less than human. The dangers and emotions encountered when she secretly teaches Jim, a young slave, to read and write threatens to ensnare the entire family.

But each member of the Sullivan family contributes to the suspense and tension of this story. The threat of financial ruin, the revelation of a dark family secret, and the dissolute life style of the pre-war South, all combine to bring out the best and worst in each of the Sullivans.

Will love and family find a path to understanding, forgiveness, and faith that will hold the Sullivans together, or will each member's unique secrets and goals prevent them from uniting in the face of conflict? Will they remain a family, or will they be destroyed by their passions?
